EXPLAINING THE CONCEPT OF HARM, AS DESCRIBED IN DATA PRIVACY BILL IN LAYMAN TERMS
The general perception of ‘Harm’ in society is very narrow. Most of the times we don’t even realize that we
are being subjected to harm, just because certain action does not fit into our or the society’s definition of
harm. The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 clears these perceptions by giving a standardized definition to
harm and what it can mean in the context of personal data. The inclusivity of the definition allows it to match
the rapid changes happening on a day-to-day basis in the space of data collection and processing.
The challenge was to explain and make people realize when they are subjected to harm and the available redressal pathways provided in the Bill. This was done by creating infographics, which is incorporating elements of text and illustration while taking the reader through an interactive narrative that gives them a birds-eye-view of
their rights as internet users, the definition of harm.
To make the infographics more interesting and handy, 'Zine' was chosen as the medium. As the zine opens up
gradually following the order of the narrative, it enables effective navigation while making the piece of
information handy at the same time. Also, it opens up into a poster that can be put up on to a wall.
The interplay of text and image allows the reader to visually grasp the information while reading it at the same
time.
